My Toronto Includes Gord Fynes

Gord Fynes, Civil Servant
chilling out on a picnic bench in Grange Park.

What is your most favourite place in the city? The Grange area (Queen W and the park)

What is it that you like about this location? My family and I go for noodles once a week at Sakura, then it’s off to Pages to browse and buy my five-year-old another Tin Tin book.

Where is the best place to eat in the city? Sakura in Village by the Grange. Delish Ramen noodle soup.

What do you like about living in Toronto? Clean, multi-cultural city on the international stage. And no, I’m not biased just ‘cuz I was born here. =)

What do you hate about living in Toronto? Ridiculous real estate prices; the smells of the intersection of Front and Bathurst and passing the Humber “shit factory”; downtown Yonge Street; traffic congestion.

Where would I find you on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the city? If not at home surfing or listening to the CBC…drinking coffee and reading a magazine in one of many parks or wandering about Queen W with my camera.

Who is your favourite Local Celebrity? Aside from the big ol’ musicians and broadcasters, I’d have to say it’s a tie between David Cronenberg and Peter Mettler. I’ve seen just about everything Cronenberg’s done, including his early shorts. My brother-in-law turned me onto Mettler’s Gambling, Gods and LSD a while back. Every frame of that film is a masterpiece. One of the first dates my wife and I went on was to a screening of Picture of Light . Both of those cats are invited to the imaginary dinner party we keep talking about having.

Car, Bike or Transit? All three. It depends on the time of day, day of the week, if the family is with me, etc.

Favorite personal story or commentary on the city One of my best friends that I played in a band with used to live above the Silver Snail comic shop about 12 years ago. I used to spend so much time at his place that I called it HQ. We were such best friends that he asked me to move in with him before he met his (now) his wife, but I couldn’t make the logistics of it happen. They ended up moving to NYC about ten years ago. I still peer up at the place when I go by it.

My Toronto includes The Stem, The Bloor Cinema, Queen Video, Rotate This, Soundscapes, Penguin Music, Sneaky Dee’s, the CBC and the NDP.
